Even if you are a cleaning aficionado, and regularly keep on top of your home maintenance, you may find that there is still dust everywhere!

That stuff just seems to multiply by the minute! So, why does your house get so dusty so quickly? We are here to help you find out, and offer some easy fixes for the problem!

Why does my home get dusty so quickly?

Dust is one of those things that just accumulates in your home so quickly. Every time you think you have given the house a deep clean, you will notice dust within a matter of days, or hours! So how does it get so dusty so quickly?

Well, dust can often be a product of airflow. If you have too much airflow in the house, you may be blowing in dirt, dust and debris that can make your home feel messy. On the other hand, if you do not have enough airflow in your home, then this will allow dust to settle everywhere.

One of the most common reasons that there may be a lot of dust in your house is because of HVAC filters.

These could be broken or clogged up in your air conditioning units, heating units, fans, windows or any other ventilation systems that you have fitted in your home. When dust has clogged up and accumulated on these items, once you turn them on, it will flow all around the house.

However, do not worry too much, dust is a common enemy of many households as it can really accumulate from a number of different things…from furniture to pet hair, to pollen and particles. So, where is it coming from?

Where is the dust coming from?

Dust is basically just small, fine particles of solid matter. These particles can come from a wide range of pollutants, such as the soil and dirt outside, sand, pet and animal hair, pollen, insects or food debris.

We’re sorry to also inform you that around 50% of the dust inside your home is probably from dead human skin cells. So, really, dust is going to be unavoidable in your home.

Dust can come from a wide variety of sources. The most common of these will be pet hairs, dander, particles of dirt, pollen, fabric or furniture fibers, and from human dead skin flakes gathering in the home.

One of the biggest culprits of hoarding dust is the carpet. The carpets in your home will gather and amass lots of dust if you do not vacuum regularly.

Pet paws, dirty shoes, debris, clothing fibers and other particles will settle in the carpet, which can be a major contributing factor in the amount of dust in your home.

In addition, upholstery, curtains and draperies are major dust collectors. The fabrics used for curtains often accumulate a lot of dust, and so when you reach to swing open the curtains in the morning, this may spread dust all around the room, which you may then carry around the home.

To counteract this, you should either vacuum often, or have your curtains dry cleaned at least once a year.

Another leading cause of dust in the home are damaged or leaking windows and doors. If these are not sealed properly, then dust, pollen and outdoor contaminants can enter the home whenever it is windy, or blowing outside.

This can be ten times worse if you have a gravel road outside, or a dusty, stony driveway outside your home, as this can be blown indoors.

Sometimes, you can feel like all you do is clean. You may be trying to remove dust day in, day out to no avail. If this is the case, then you may need to adjust your cleaning technique.

Certain cleaning products will just spread dust further along surfaces and into the air in your home, and so you will need to know exactly how to prevent your home from being so dusty!

How do I stop my room from being so dusty?

There is a simple answer to keeping your home from being so dusty, and that is regular cleaning and maintenance. The best way to prevent dust is to never let it settle.

If you vacuum your floors, skirting boards, cupboards, carpets, and all areas of your home frequently, then you can ensure that dust particles are not gathering and spreading throughout the house.

You are best off using a vacuum cleaner that has a HEPA filter, as this works to trap up to 99% of dirt, dust, and debris! Try to tell friends, family, and neighbors to remove their shoes as they come into your home to stop dirt and dust from spreading around the house, too.

You should also ensure that you clean your filtration systems, fans, and ventilation systems, as these can spread dust around the room once turned on.

We also would thoroughly recommend having upholstery, curtains, cushions, and any soft furnishings in your home regularly cleaned to stop the accumulation of dust in the rooms.

Finally, you may need to alter your cleaning techniques. Always remember to use a microfiber cloth as this will trap the dust when cleaning. In addition, you are going to want to clean and dust from top to bottom, dusting higher surfaces first, in case any falls below, and making your way down to remove it all.
