How to Clean White Converse Trainers In the Washer
Knowing whether or not you can put converse in the washing machine is the difference between half an hour of hand-scrubbing or thirty seconds of minimal effort.
Whether it’s a stain or just regular maintenance, the washing machine is a great time-saver when it comes to everyone’s favourite canvas shoes.
Converse advises against putting their shoes in the washing machine. But if you’re going to do it anyway, there are some steps you can take to keep them from getting damaged.
In this post, we’ll explain the best ways to wash your converse, so you can avoid ruining them and keep them looking their best.
Can You Put Converse in the Washer?
Yes, you can wash Converse in the washing machine – although you’re not technically supposed to.
Canvas sneakers aren’t designed to go in the washing machine, but with the right techniques, they’ll most likely be fine. However, we wouldn’t recommend putting your brand new shoes in there just in case.
With new canvas sneakers, stick to spot-treating stains as and when they occur, and only use the machine when it’s completely necessary.
How Do You Wash Converse in the Washing Machine?
Wash your shoes on a gentle cycle, like delicates, and use warm or cold water. A mild detergent is best to prevent the colours from fading, or for white converse consider using a whitening detergent to keep them looking bright.
For any dark stains, we don’t recommend a spot treatment as this might cause inconsistencies in the colours. Instead, try scrubbing at harder stains with a mild soap, cold or warm water and a toothbrush.
Clear dawn works well for this.
How Can I Wash My Converse Without Ruining Them?
- Use a dry brush to remove any mud and excess dirt from the entire shoe
- Take off the laces to avoid things getting tangled
- Put a few towels in with your shoes to prevent them hitting the sides of the machine and getting damaged
- Avoid hot water – this can melt the glue and cause dyes to run
- It’s best not to use the dryer – this can cause shrinking
How to Wash Converse FAQs
Will My Converse Shrink in the Washing Machine?
Converse, or any canvas sneakers, are only likely to shrink in the washing machine if the temperatures are very high. When washing at a mild or cold temperature the fabric should be fine. If you’re worried, it might be best not to risk it – try hand washing instead.
Can White Converse Go in the Washing Machine?
White converse can be washed in the washing machine. Be sure to remove laces and avoid bleaches or chlorinated products. Hang in the sun to air dry and enhance the whitening effect.
Can You Put Converse in the Washing Machine? – Final Thoughts
Like most things in life, just because you’re not supposed to – doesn’t mean you shouldn’t.
Washing any shoes in hot water could lead to fabric shrinking or glue melting. Using a coloured detergent could lead to stains, and a too strong detergent could cause bleaching or cause colours to run.
So as long as you use a mild detergent and wash on a mild temperature, you’ll almost certainly be fine.
Converse obviously don’t want their products to get damaged as it doesn’t look good for the quality of the shoes so they would officially advise against it.
But as we say – be cautious and you’ll probably be fine.
