Not being able to use a washing machine in your home can have a knock on effect on many other parts of your life.
Travelling to the laundrette takes time, and you will lose a big chunk of your day waiting for your clothes to be washed.
It’s also expensive – why would you want to waste money there when you have a perfectly fine washing machine at home. It just doesn’t have a water hookup.
You’re probably wondering if there is another way you can make your washing machine work, without an internal water hookup.
Today, we’re going to discuss how a garden hose could be the solution you’ve been looking for.
Can I use a garden hose for my washing machine?
Yes!
You can use your garden hose with your washing machine. For both internal and external water hookup systems.
Using your garden hose for your washing machine is a simple and inexpensive way to get your machine up and running.
Garden hoses can be a good replacement for any water-feeding pipes that your washing machine is missing. They are less expensive than the official parts and they work just as well.
If you are looking to use a garden hose to replace these water feeding pipes, or to facilitate using outdoor water outlets then you will need to purchase a few items to make your system work.
You will need plumber’s tape and some coupler connectors.
How to connect your garden hose to your washing machine:
Now that you know that you can use your garden hose for your washing machine, you’re probably wondering how you can do that. Well, don’t worry! We’re going to cover that today too.
Equipment required:
- Garden hose – one for hot water, one for cold water (the further away the water outlet is from your machine, the longer hose you will need)
- Washing machine
- Plumbers tape
- Coupler connections (2 if your washing machine does not have one, 4 if you need one for your water tap as well)
Note – Garden hoses use male and female thread connectors. This allows multiple hoses to be attached to one another without leaking. You will be attaching the male end of your hose to the washing machine. You may also find it beneficial to have different colored hoses for your hot and cold water pipes.
Step 1 – Take your plumber’s tape and wrap it clockwise around the male end of the hose. This prevents any leaks and helps to relieve the pressure on the hose. Once this is sealed, insert the male end of the hose into the cold water inlet on your washing machine.
There may be a coupler connector already installed, if so the hose should slot in. If there is not one there you will have to purchase one and install it yourself.
Step 2 – To secure the hose in place you will have to tighten the connector. To do this turn the connector clockwise. You will need to hold the hose in the correct position as you do this. Keep turning until the hose is secure. We then recommend that you turn the connector an extra half for safety.
Step 3 – Take your plumber’s tape and wrap it in a clockwise direction around the water spigot (the external water source or internal water hookup. After this is sealed, take the other end of the hose (female end) and attach it to the water source using a coupler connector. When attached, turn the couple to the tightener, when tight turn an extra half turn for safety.
Step 4 – Now, you will want to use your plumber’s tape to seal the threads on the male end of the hose you are using for hot water. When this is done, place your hose (the male end) into the hot water coupler connector at the back of the washing machine. Hold the hose and turn until tight and secure. Then turn an extra half for safety.
Step 5 – The next step is to seal the treads on the female end of your hot water hose before attaching it to your hot water external outlet. You will need to use a coupler collector. You should turn until tight and then turn an extra half turn to make sure it will not come loose.
Step 6 – Do a test run of the washing machine before you do a cycle using your clothes. If you have an issue, check that you have not crossed your hoses (i.e. the hot water hose is feeding the cold water inlet). As this is the most common cause of issues.
